The government approves a ‘heroic grant’ to residents of Ofakim, following the events of October 7

Rachel of Ofakim

In an unprecedented move, the Israeli government approved today the proposal of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to grant a “heroic grant” to the residents of Ofakim, following their steadfastness during the events of October 7. The decision follows the recommendations of the public committee headed by Prof. Aviad Hacohen, which was established to respond to the victims of events that have not yet received full compensation.

The approved grant is 7,180 NIS for an adult and 1,436 NIS for an child, and will be given to city residents and those who were present in Ofakim on October 7. This decision constitutes an official recognition of the heroism of Ofakim residents, who suffered heavy losses with the fall of 47 residents during the attack.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich emphasized the importance of the decision: “The grants express the State of Israel’s recognition of the city’s residents’ bravery and their steadfastness on the difficult and terrible day we experienced in Simchat Torah.” He added that “the national strength of the city radiates to the entire State of Israel.”

MK Almog Cohen, who worked hard to promote the grant, defined the decision as historical. He noted that “Ofakim is a city of heroes” and emphasized the unity demonstrated by the residents of the city in dealing with the events. Cohen added: “The price we paid is too heavy. But today, the residents of the city receive a hug and appreciation for these extraordinary expressions of heroism.”

The decision on the grant is part of a broader effort to respond to victims of the October 7 events who have not yet received full compensation. It reflects the state’s recognition of the victims and heroism of its citizens in a time of severe national crisis.

Labor Minister Yoav Ben-Tzur was also noted as having made a significant contribution to the advancement of the move, while harnessing the national insurance to the issue.
