The government has unanimously approved: Dr. Yechiel Leiter will be appointed as Israel’s ambassador to the United States. Leiter is expected to replace current Ambassador Mike Herzog in office with a nomination that will take effect on January 24. The two are expected to go through a procedure. The Foreign Ministry said that the appointment was received after the appointment committee “was very impressed with Dr. Leiter, his unique experience, his moral personality and his good familiarity with the areas of employment of the position and the challenges he faces.”

Leiter is a bereaved father who lost his son, Major Moshe (her friend) Leiter, who fell in a battle in the northern Gaza Strip last November. Leiter holds the title of Doctor of Political science, Lecturer and Senior Researcher at the Shilo Policy Forum. In addition, Leiter has previously served in a variety of public positions, including Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Education, Head of the Ministry of Finance’s Headquarters and Acting Chairman of the Israel Ports Company.
