The key details of the hostage deal

The Associated Press reported that Hamas approved the draft of the deal with Israel; however, according to an Israeli source, Hamas has yet to give Israel a final answer. In addition, within and outside the Gaza Strip, elements from the mediators in Qatar and Egypt began to implement their steps in the framework of the deal.

The BBC, Britain’s main media outlet, has provided details on the deal between Israel and Hamas. In a report released this morning, the British news network received information from a “senior Palestinian source” familiar with the details of the deal.

34 hostages will be released

According to the report, the entire deal will release 34 Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including some 190 serving sentences of 15 years or more – that is, those involved in murderous attacks.

The BBC has published more information on the model of passage of the Gaza population interested in this from the southern Gaza Strip to the north – with two points of passage along the ‘Netzarim axis’: A pedestrian crossing along the coastal road, while vehicles, trucks and carts must cross through the central road, via Salah a-Din (the continuation of Route 4). At the crossing points, teams from the mediators – Qatar and Egypt – will operate a mechanism for checking the return, and mirroring machines for finding weapons.

The deal is a gradual process

An important point that emerged in the BBC report is related to the pace of execution of the various stages of the deal, when mutual distrust between Israel and Hamas prevents large transactions from being carried out in one instance. According to the report, this will be a gradual process: On the first day of the deal, three hostages will be released, and at the same time the IDF will begin a slow withdrawal from populated areas. After a week, four more hostages will be released, and the refugees’ movement to the north will be allowed to begin. The hostages will be released in pulses, and so the IDF will slowly retreat toward the “buffer zone” that it created in the perimeter, about one kilometer away from the border. At the same time, prisoners will be released from the Israeli prison gradually.

According to many reports, this deal is more concrete than any other discussion in the past year, and is close to being signed in the near future. However, it is important to remember that the transaction requires government approval, and that carrying out one stage of the transaction does not guarantee that it will hold up to additional stages.
