Today in History: The Arab peace

Today in 2020, the peace agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel was presented to the public.

After the crushing defeat of the Palestinians in the War of Independence and the establishment of the State of Israel, Israel’s central conflict became a conflict with the neighboring Arab states. A number of major wars were fought, all of which were backed by the Arab world’s neighbors; at the same time, the Arab states imposed an economic boycott on Israel and brands that agreed to trade it, and sometimes even imposed sanctions on its allies. The Israeli-Arab conflict weakened after Israel’s peace agreements with Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994; most Arab countries remained hostile to Israel but could only be expressed diplomatically and economically. This situation began to change in the second decade of the 21st century, when hostility to Israel weakened, the occupation in Judea and Samaria aged, and Israel’s economic prosperity was at its peak; in the push of the American administration led by Donald Trump, the UAE decided to normalize with Israel in August 2020. In return, the Israeli government agreed to a deal to sell American planes to the state, and pledged to postpone initiatives for the meantime to annex territories in the West Bank. After the UAE, the opening was breached, and 4 other Arab and Muslim and Arab countries (Morocco, Sudan, Bahrain, Cosvo) carried out normalization in the series of the Abraham Accords.
